En este trabajo se va a aplicar el postulado de Bogue (1970:156) quien señala que la distribución de la población en el espacio debe ser estudiada con dos diferentes enfoques, que son complementarios : el ""agregativo"", que investiga la población considerando el espacio total del país, y el ""distributivo"", que la estudia a través de subdivisiones en áreas que integran todo el espacio, las cuales pueden ser estados, regiones u otro tipo de división del espacio. La utilización del enfoque geográfico espacial es la contribución de la Geografía al estudio de la dimensión de las desigualdades existentes en la distribución y crecimiento de la población urbana del país.

    El problema de definir una población como urbana tiene ya una larga historia, se han expresado múltiples definiciones y ninguna satisface totalmente. No es fácil determinar el límite a partir del cual una localidad sea considerada como urbana. Éste varía de un país a otro; aun dentro de un mismo país puede variar según lo establezcan diferentes autores."
