A través de los años y de las culturas el hombre ha conferido cargas antagónicas a las excreciones y secreciones, ya sean éstas humanas, animales, vegetales, terrestre y aun astrales, pues en muchas culturas de Mesoamérica se consideraba que el oro era excremento del Sol y la plata de la luna, las resinas, sangre de los árboles, como el hule, el chicle y. sobre todo, el copal, eran altamente valoradas: al grado de que el humo de este último se tenía por comida para los dioses.

    Es posible que los mesoamericanos igualmente atribuyeran al ámbar, resina fósil que también se quema y desprende una sustancia aromática, tuviera el mismo origen que el ccpel. Cabe señalar que muchos objetos de ámbar recuperados en las excavaciones arqueológicas, fueron confundidos con copal, como bien se iluso era en las páginas de este interesante trabajo que aquí se reseña, la autora, de una manera diáfana y transparente como el material estudiado, inicia su libro con una serie de conceptos generales pero relevantes para el estudio del ámbar. En el primer capítulo, titulado ""Una gema con historia"", da cuenta del origen, composición química, formación geológica, características físicas, usos, denominaciones y aspectos culturales de las distintas variedades de esta resina fósil, cuya antigüedad, en el caso del ámbar chiapaneco, ronda los veinte millones de años, edad bastante joven si se le compara otros yacimientos cuyas fechas pueden alcanzar hasta los trescientos millones de años.

    También se hace mención de las distintas localidades del mundo donde se han detectado y explotado yacimientos de esta gema, registrándose el uso, en el Viejo Mundo, desde hace por lo menos treinta mil años. La constante presencia de artefactos de ámbar en los registros arqueológicos señala el aprecio que se le tenía en diversas épocas y culturas, así como sus patrones de distribución y las cambiantes rutas de comercio a lo largo de la historia.

    La palabra ámbar, con la que en castellano se conoce esta resina, es de origen árabe. Los griegos le llamaban electrón, y los romanos succinum."     Cuando trabajaba en estos capítulos llegó a mis manos el fervoroso y .desparpajado libro Ambrosio y Jerónimo, dos grandes escritores romanos del profesor uruguayo Vicente O. Cicalese. Poco tiempo después tuve conocimiento de su muerte. En algunos fragmentos de san Jerónimo, que conocí por él, quise mantener ciertos rasgos de su versión. Quede aquí constancia."
