La ilegalidad con la que se practica favorece la injusticia y la desigualdad. Por otra parte, la cantidad de mujeres que fallecen prematuramente o que quedan estériles por abortos mal practicados plantea un grave problema de salud pública que el Estado debe enfrentar. ¿Por qué entonces no se despenaliza el aborto? En el fondo de la prohibición legal del aborto hay consideraciones morales que en este volumen se exponen y se discuten. Nadie está a favor del aborto en el sentido de que se le considere un bien o algo deseable por sí mismo. Sin embargo, es un hecho innegable que en múltiples casos muchas mujeres están convencidas de que es un mal menor frente al hecho de tener un hijo no deseado.
