    In the past, finding artistic references for university theater productions required the compilation of documents that could be presented in an organized and articulated fashion. Given the ephemeral nature of theater, many creators left the task of documenting what was happening on our stages to chance, with the result that key moments of this history were lost forever. Over the years, the archives and records changed hands and were relegated to a behind-the-scenes seat. In the end, the task became a mammoth, practically impossible undertaking.

    One of the raisons détre of this book is to underline the importance of documenting the evolution of theater in México as a mirror in which we can comprehend the present and recognize ourselves in the future. In this particular case, our efforts would not have come to fruition without the vision and sensitivity of Rector Juan Ramón de la Fuente and the collaboration and vocation of dozens of others who either wrote these chapters or provided us with access to their personal archives.

    The original idea for this book was proposed by none other than the UNAM although it should come as no surprise that, as an institution devoted to academic research, the university is eager to record some important chapters of its own history. At the initiative of the Theater Department, a wealth of authors, artists, researchers and photographers were invited to participate in this huge collective effort.

    Why are there so few publications on university theater?

    The answer is simple: it is difficult to find consensus on a play. Every spectator has his or her own interpretation and what is commendable to some, is disastrous in the eyes of others. In our attempt to provide an overview of the history and development of theater at the UNAM we found ourselves like paleontologists trying to envisage the Tyrannosaurus Rex. Nonetheless, documenting the theater produced by the university has brought us a keener appreciation of the audacity and creative drive of its advocates.

    This book is an attempt to organize and present a genealogical past, a family album, a vehicle that helps us understand the roots of university theater. On making this journey, we have corroborated the ephemeral nature of theater as a phenomenon that reflects its unique time, space and circumstances. Not even the best footage could convey the impact of a production on its audience, because todays spectators are viewing it from a different perspective.

    The work of the men and women whose creative energies helped establish Mexican theater is analyzed in these pages. The first section of the book briefly covers the history of theater at the UNAM; the second pays tribute to eight winners of the National Arts and Sciences Award who began their careers in university theater; and the final section contains photographs of 70 productions that have left their mark on our stages over the last 50 years.

    The theater produced by the UNAM is a unique phenomenon deserving of ongoing study: this is theater with vocation; theater that merits due appreciation and that should be fostered and sponsored.

    Like any theater production, this book is a collective work, as can be gleaned from the numerous photographs that pay homage to some of most active proponents of university theater in México. As such, it invites us to reflect on an infinite variety of related research topics. In short, it is an invaluable record of the cultural heritage of university theater, which also makes up the cultural heritage of our country and the world at large. A version of what could be called a general history, yet one that we hope will be meaningful to spectators of any era.     Desde hace muchos años, la necesidad de encontrar referentes artísticos para la creación escénica universitaria demandaba la recopilación de material documental que pudiera presentarse de manera organizada y articulada. Dada la naturaleza efímera del hecho escénico, muchos creadores dejaron al azar la posibilidad de capturar lo que sucedía en los escenarios, de modo que momentos clave de esta historia se perdieron para siempre. A través de los años, los archivos y acervos cambiaron de manos y se relegaron a segundo plano. La tarea se convirtió en una empresa titánica y prácticamente imposible.

    Este libro, entre otras cosas, renueva una convocatoria para fomentar el registro de lo que acontezca en nuestros escenarios como una forma de valorar nuestro presente y como un vehículo para reconocernos en el futuro. En este caso particular, esto no hubiera sido posible sin la sensibilidad y la visión del rector Juan Ramón de la Fuente y la complicidad y vocación teatral de decenas de personas que contribuyeron con la elaboración de sus textos y el acceso a sus archivos personales.

    Esta publicación es una propuesta originada en el seno de la institución que alberga el máximo espacio destinado a la investigación académica. No debe extrañarnos que sea la Universidad quien se preocupe por organizar algunos de los capítulos de su propia historia. Gracias a un impulso generado desde la Dirección de Teatro, un importante número de autores, estudiosos y artistas, además de investigadores y fotógrafos, fueron invitados a participar en este enorme esfuerzo colectivo.

    ¿Por qué hay tan pocas publicaciones sobre el teatro de la Universidad?

    Si reflexionamos al respecto, en la apreciación de una puesta en escena son inusuales los consensos. Cada espectador tiene derecho a su propia interpretación del hecho escénico, y lo que resulta maravilloso para algunos es un desastre para otros. A pesar de esta circunstancia, había que presentar un boceto de la historia y evolución del teatro universitario. En un esfuerzo paleontológico, hemos imaginado al Tiranosaurio Rex. Este gran esfuerzo documental nos invita a analizar la audacia y el poder creativo del teatro producido por la Universidad. Es un intento por organizar y revelar un pasado genealógico, un álbum de familia, un instrumento para entender un origen. La experiencia de su recorrido nos permite corroborar su naturaleza efímera y confirmar que se trata de un fenómeno a la medida de sus circunstancias. Ni los mejores registros filmográficos podrán nunca revelar el impacto real del material escénico frente a su público, pues el espectador de este registro siempre estará en otro espacio, en otro tiempo, en otra circunstancia.

    Este compendio documental presenta el trabajo de los hombres y mujeres que han contribuido a conformar el teatro mexicano con mayor vigor creativo en la historia escénica nacional. En una primera parte explica brevemente su devenir histórico; en la segunda, celebra a ocho Premios Nacionales de Ciencias y Artes formados por el teatro de la Universidad, y en la última, nos invita a realizar un recorrido visual a través de 70 puestas en escena que han dejado huella durante más de 50 años de actividad teatral en nuestros escenarios.

    El teatro producido por la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México es un fenómeno único en el mundo que debe ser un objeto de estudio permanente. Es un teatro con una vocación que debe valorarse, fomentarse y protegerse.

    Como sucede con todos los elementos que constituyen una puesta en escena, este libro es también el fruto del trabajo colectivo de los artistas mencionados en sus páginas, por lo que presentamos una propuesta editorial que incluye los créditos de sus principales creadores en innumerables pies de foto.     Las Conversaciones fueron uno de los cuatro componentes de inSite_05, aunadas a Intervenciones y Escenarios que se recogen en el libro Público [Situacional] y la exposición de museo Farsites: Crisis urbanas y síntomas doméstico s en el arte contemporáneo reciente, documentada en el libro Farsites. Durante más de un decenio inSite ha comisionado intervenciones de artistas que inciden sobre la urdimbre del paisaje urbano, la frontera y el tejido público de San Diego-Tijuana."
