A un año de su creación" ["short_description"]=> string(1464) "El Laboratorio Universitario de Radiocarbono (LUR) surge del convenio de colaboración firmado el 16 de febrero de 2004 entre las coordinaciones de la Investigación Científica y la de Humanidades. Este convenio involucra a los Institutos de Geofísica (IGEF), Investigaciones Antropológicas (IIA) y Geología (IGL).

    El LUR tiene como antecedente al Laboratorio de Fechamiento del IIA, que dejó de operar en enero de 2003 [1]. La importancia de reactivar este laboratorio, a través de la formación del LUR, radica en que en México solamente existe otro laboratorio de fechamiento por radiocarbono por centelleo líquido, perteneciente al Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH), pero con fines universitarios, éste es el único.

    El LUR tiene entre sus objetivos generales realizar investigaciones conjuntas en los métodos de análisis radiométricos y aplicaciones de Carbono 14 y Tritio y apoyar la participación de los investigadores, técnicos académicos y estudiantes de la UNAM y otras entidades.

    Particularmente los objetivos que se plantearon para este primer año de la activación del LUR fueron:

    - Valorar la infraestructura existente en LUR al momento de la firma del convenio, su funcionamiento y, en caso de ser necesario, aumentarla.

    - Desarrollar y evaluar los protocolos de operación del LUR.

    - Establecer contacto con otros laboratorios de este tipo." Si bien hubo varios ensayos acerca del tema, el primer tratado de magnetismo De Magnete fue escrito en el siglo XVII por William Gilbert (Gilbert, 1600). Las conclusiones de este trabajo pusieron fin a diversas especulaciones acerca del tema y marcaron en el siglo XVII un comienzo en el Geomagnetismo.

    El magnetismo ambiental es un campo de las Ciencias de la Tierra y Físicas mucho más reciente que ha potenciado su importancia desde los 80s a partir del desarrollo de nuevas técnicas y métodos de mediciones magnéticas, así como de la investigación de diferentes parámetros magnéticos y su interpretación física en contextos geológicos, climáticos y ambientales entre otros. Aunque muchos trabajos anteriores han sido reconocidos dentro del campo de la investigación, la primera descripción explícita fue dada por Thompson et al. (1980); en dicho artículo se mostraban distintos parámetros magnéticos y su aplicación e interpretación en estudios ambientales. Posteriormente, la publicación del libro ""Environmental Magnetism"" (Thompson y Oldfield, 1986) generó amplias discusiones sobre el tema atrayendo la atención de investigadores de diversas ramas. De este modo el magnetismo ambiental se afianzó rápidamente con el transcurso del tiempo como un campo multi e interdisciplinario."
