    Pues bien, el término ""Constitución"" tiene una larga historia, que se remonta a la antigua Roma con las Constituciones imperiales, pasando, posteriormente, por las Constituciones pontificias; sin embargo, lo que nos interesa es la adopción del mismo a finales del siglo XVIII como sinónimo de esa ley fundamental y suprema que representaba el abandono del Antiguo Régimen en favor del Estado liberal y democrático de derecho.

    Por ello, la ""Constitución"" y, por ende, el constitucionalismo moderno, se yerguen como parteaguas entre las edades moderna y contemporánea. Pero la Constitución, en su acepción moderna, no es simplemente esa ley suprema que corona toda una pirámide normativa.
